Overview

Gambling harms impact individuals, families, communities, and are not dependent on whether or not someone is a problem or disordered gambler. Harm from gambling can take many different forms, including:

  • financial harm;
  • relationship disruption, conflict, or breakdown;
  • emotional or psychological distress;
  • decline in health;
  • cultural harm;
  • reduced performance at work or study; and
  • criminal activity.

Key Points

Gambling harm encompasses broader social impacts and references comorbidities, as well as financial, legal, and other individual impacts. Harms can occur at any time, and are not limited to problem and disordered gamblers.
